"Fifty years ago there were no instructors for us players. We were on our own. How well anyone played was a personal responsibility. Any advice from an "old-timer" might have been nothing more than "go get-um, son."

My book has two themes. First, you will experience the ups and downs of my six, often frustrating, minor-league seasons during which I fought the ambivalence of pursuing a career in professional baseball versus one in the study of architecture. Second, you will be given an inside look at the front office of a major-league organization to see how the introduction of technology and use of the computer has transformed America's pastime.

Baseball used to be bats, balls, hits, and errors. It is now analytics, algorithms, computers, and sabermetrics, and who knows what tomorrow's scientific discoveries will bring. The "brainiacs" in charge have morphed the game into the technological age, retooling it with grandiose expectations only to watch play suffer, and their athletes break down with alarming regularity.
